1. Accepting these terms

By using rentguardca.com you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. We may update these terms; the "last updated" date above reflects the current version, and continued use after a change means you accept it.

2. This is not legal advice

California rent law is jurisdiction-specific and changes frequently. AB 1482 is a statewide floor that dozens of city ordinances override with stricter local rules, exemptions turn on facts we never see, and the CPI figures reset annually. A number produced by this calculator is a starting point for a conversation with a qualified California landlord-tenant attorney, not a substitute for one.

Serving a defective rent increase notice, or an increase above your lawful cap, can expose you to real liability. If the stakes are meaningful, get advice specific to your property before you act.

3. Accuracy, and the limits of it

We work to keep the CPI tables, statutory citations, and ordinance list current, and we document our sources and update process on the About page. We do not warrant that the information is accurate, complete, or current.

In particular: the local rent-control city list is explicitly not exhaustive, and the calculator does not compute local ordinance caps at all — it only flags that one may exist. The absence of your city from that list is not evidence that your city has no ordinance.

4. Your responsibilities

• You are solely responsible for verifying any figure before relying on it, and for the content of any notice you serve on a tenant.
• You will not use the site to violate any law, including fair housing and anti-discrimination law.
• You will not scrape, overload, probe, or attempt to disrupt the site or its infrastructure, or use automated systems to submit the waitlist form.
• You will not misrepresent the site's output as legal advice from a licensed professional.

5. Intellectual property

The site's design, code, and written guides are our copyrighted work. Statutory text, CPI figures, and other government data are not ours and are reproduced as public information. The rent increase notice text generated by the tool is yours to use, adapt, and serve freely — that is what it is for. You may link to any page here without asking.

6. No warranty

The site is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any defect will be corrected.

7. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, RentGuard CA and anyone involved in producing this site will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost rent, statutory penalties, or legal costs, arising out of your use of or inability to use the site — whether or not we were advised such damages were possible.

Where liability cannot be excluded, our total aggregate liability is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim, or one hundred US dollars. The site is currently free, so for most visitors that first figure is zero. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, in which case they apply to the extent permitted.

8. Third-party links and advertising

Pages may link to third-party sites, and may in future display advertising or affiliate links, from which we could earn a commission. We do not control third-party content and are not responsible for it. A link is not an endorsement, and any commission we earn does not change what the calculator tells you. If affiliate relationships are introduced, they will be disclosed on the pages that carry them.

9. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect, which is very little — the calculator sends nothing to us at all. It is incorporated into these terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in California, and you consent to their jurisdiction.
